현 Harmonia Mundi를 대표할 뿐만 아니라 클래식계에서도 최고의 기량으로 가장 주목 받고 있는 장-기앙 케라스와 알렉산더 멜니코프가 또 하나의 명반을 발표했다. 베토벤이 첼로를 위해 작곡한 5개의 소나타 전곡과 변주곡은 1796년과 1815년 사이에 작곡 되어졌다. 그는 프로이센의 국왕 프리드리히 빌헬름 2세에게 헌정하고 그의 첼로 선생이었던 장 피에르 뒤포르를 위해서 Op.5을 작곡했다. 헨델과 모차르트 작품 주제에 의한 유쾌한 변주곡은 베토벤의 창작 전기에 속하는 형식이며, 첼로 소나타 Op.102는 그의 작곡 말년의 자유로운 형식이 잘 드러나고 있다. 케라스와 멜니코프는 투명하고 매우 아름다우며 한 치의 오차도 없는 정밀한 앙상블을 보여주고 있으며 각 소나타의 풍부하고 세밀한 표정을 그리고 있다.
