멘델스존은 19세기 낭만파 음악의 창시자 중의 한 사람이다. 부유한 유대계 은행가의 아들로 태어난 그는 행복한 생활을 했기 때문에 작품도 품위가 있고 명쾌하다.
고전적인 형식미에 시적인 낭만적 정신을 기반으로 하여 자유로운 서정미와 환상미를 지니고 있으며, 때로는 아름다운 자연 묘사가 작품에 잠재되어 있다. 그의 음악적인 재질은 9세에 이미 연주회의 무대에 설 수 있을 정도였다.
그는 작곡가로 유명해졌지만, 한편 1835년부터는 라이프치히의 게반트하우스 지휘자로서도 크게 활약했다. 그는 작곡가로서, 또 연주가로서 이탈...

1720년 대 영국 런던에서 최고의 인기를 얻었던 세 명의 작곡가들이 만든 걸작 오페라 아리아를 미국을 대표하는 카운터 테너 로렌스 자조가 노래한다. 그의 장기이기도 한 헨델을 중심으로 조반니 보논치니, 아틸리오 아리오스티 세 사람은 모두 같은 시기에 런던에서 대활약을 했으며, 음반 타이틀인 [A Royal Trio]는 로얄 아카데미 오브 뮤직에서 활동했던 이들을 의미한다. 이 단체는 영어권 국가에서의 첫 오페라 회사로 1719년 창설되어 헨델의 줄리오 체사레를 포함하여 18세기 주요 걸작 오페라를 초연하는 등 런던에서 눈부신 활동을 했다. 여기에 수록된 오페라들은 1719년에서 1729년까지 런던에서 카스트라토에 의해 초연된 오페라 작품들이다. 로렌스 자조는 영국에서 성악을 배웠으며 부드러운 미성으로 많은 인기를 얻고 있다. 르네 야곱스와 리날도, 사울, 메시아 등 많은 작품을 함께 했다.
