그의 작품에서는 풍부한 멜로디와 절묘한 대위법의 취급에 의해 한없는 아름다움이 나타나고 있으며 그 기교의 밑바닥에는 종교적 신념이 깃들어 있었다. 대위법의 작법에 기반을 두고 있으면서도 화성적 수법을 가미시켜 이후 많은 작곡가들에게 영향을 주었다. 바흐는 음악 역사상 높은 가치를 지니고 있다고 평가받는 28곡의 평균을 클라비어 곡집을 비롯하여 대 미사곡, 마태 수난곡, 토카타 d단조 오르간곡, 기악 독주곡, 중주곡, 합주곡, 협주곡 등 여러 방면에 많은 작품을 남겼다.
